Every panel is supplied without holes, finished with flat-polished edges, and produced from clear toughened safety glass with heat soaking to further reduce the risk of rare spontaneous breakage.

Standards & compliance notes (important)

• The NCC references AS 1288 for glass selection/installation, and glass used in barriers must withstand loading forces in accordance with AS/NZS 1170.1.

• Under AS 1288:2021 guidance on barriers, any barrier protecting a fall of 5m or more is required to be laminated glass.

• AS 1288:2021 places strong emphasis on what the barrier system does after a component has failed; for monolithic toughened barriers, the handrail/top rail is identified as a key safety feature.

Why heat soaking matters

Heat soaking is a test process intended to help eliminate panels with nickel sulphide inclusions, a rare imperfection that can contribute to spontaneous fragmentation in toughened glass.

Heat soak process (plain-English)

1. The glass is loaded into a heat soak oven with gaps for airflow.

2. The toughened glass is heated to about 280°C (±10°C).

3. Once at temperature, it’s typically held for around two hours, then cooled.

4. Any susceptible panels are more likely to fail in the controlled environment of the oven, not in service.
