Why Heat Soaking Matters
Heat soaking is a test process intended to help identify panels affected by nickel sulphide inclusions, a rare imperfection that can contribute to spontaneous fragmentation in toughened glass.
Heat Soak Process, Explained Simply
- The glass is loaded into a heat soak oven with gaps to allow airflow.
- The toughened glass is heated to approximately 280°C (±10°C).
- Once at temperature, it is typically held for around two hours before cooling.
- Any susceptible panels are more likely to fail in the controlled environment of the oven, rather than in service.
